What do we know about the drone attacks on Moscow?

In a recent development, the Russian defense ministry announced that Ukraine launched a significant drone attack on Moscow on Tuesday. However, Russia’s air defense systems successfully destroyed all the drones. This incident occurred shortly after the Kremlin was targeted in a drone strike, which Russia attributed to Ukraine, and coincided with a new wave of Russian airstrikes on Kyiv. Here are the key details known so far:

  • Russia’s defense ministry accused Ukraine of carrying out a “terrorist” attack and claimed to have successfully downed all the drones involved.
  • According to the defense ministry, eight drones attacked the Russian capital. However, a Telegram channel called Baza, which has connections to the security services, reported the involvement of over 25 drones.
  • Mykhailo Podolyak, an aide to the Ukrainian president, stated that Kyiv was observing the strike “with enjoyment” but denied any involvement from Ukraine. He also suggested the possibility of more similar attacks in the future.
  • RBC, a news site, cited a source indicating that more than 10 drones had been intercepted by anti-aircraft systems.
  • Sergei Sobyanin, the mayor of Moscow, mentioned that two individuals sought medical assistance following the strike, but there were no reported fatalities.
  • Russia’s Investigative Committee, responsible for investigating major crimes, stated that several drones had landed on buildings in Moscow, causing minor damages. They are currently conducting an investigation into the incident.
  • RBC reported that three buildings were struck by the drones, including two near Leninsky Prospekt in southern Moscow and another in the town of Moskovskiy, close to Vnukovo Airport.
  • A prominent Russian lawmaker disclosed that three of the drones were downed in the exclusive Rublyovka suburb, where Russia’s political and business elite reside, and where President Vladimir Putin has an official residence.
  • One resident of a targeted building in Moscow recounted the attack occurring around 0300 GMT and her evacuation by a security team.
