‘Look what came in the mail today!’ Orbán poses in a hat from Trump
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán is at it again. Fresh from being pictured shaking hands with Vladimir Putin, Orbán on Wednesday donned a hat he said had been sent to him by Donald Trump.
“Look what came in the mail today! Thank you for your support, @realDonaldTrump!” Orbán wrote on X next to a photo of himself wearing a bright red cap with “TRUMP” written in capital letters.
Handwritten on the front of the cap is “Viktor you are great” and what appears to be Trump’s signature. On the side are the numbers 45 and 47 — Trump was the 45th U.S. president and wants to be its 47th.
The gift may be an apology from the former U.S. president, as earlier this week Trump mixed up the leaders of Hungary and Turkey. “There’s a man, Viktor Orbán, did anyone ever hear of him?” Trump said at a rally in New Hampshire. “He’s probably, like, one of the strongest leaders anywhere in the world. He’s the leader of Turkey.” Turkey’s president is Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
The bromance between Orbán and Trump goes back years, and has featured Trump declaring that Orbán “has done a tremendous job” and is “respected all over Europe.“
Orbán, meanwhile, said at a meeting of the U.S. Conservative Political Action Coalition earlier this year: “Come back, Mr President. Make America great again and bring us peace.”
On Monday, Orbán caused a stir after he compared Hungary’s EU membership to the Soviet occupation of his country. The previous week, Orbán was pictured clasping hands with Putin, the first photographed handshake between the Russian president and an EU leader since Moscow launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
