PBA On Tour: Terrafirma downs shorthanded San Miguel Beer
MANILA, Philippines-Ed Daquioag and Javi Gomez de Liano shared main responsibilities in helping Terrafirma pull away in the fourth quarter and defeated depleted San Miguel Beer, 85-72, in the PBA On Tour held Sunday at Filoil Ecooil Centre in San Juan City.
Daquioag and Gomez de Liano combined for 15 points in the payoff period that enabled the Dyip to end a three-game slide and improve to 4-6 with a game to spare in the exhibition series against unbeaten Magnolia.
“We made the most out of our advantage on offense with our bigs and our shooters, and they were able to move their feet and play good, solid defense,” said coach Johnedel Cardel.
Juami Tiongson topscored with 15 points despite going 3-of-10 from three-point range, Daquioag had 13 points, four rebounds and three assists while Gomez de Liano had nine points and three rebounds for Terrafirma.
De Liano’s basket in the initial half of the fourth kept Terrafirma ahead before Daquioag began to make shots late which spelled doom for a San Miguel side that ended a miserable On Tour stint.
Jericho Cruz had 19 points and six rebounds while Rodney Brondial also scored 19 with 17 rebounds but the Beermen finished with a 3-8 record.
San Miguel won two of its first three games before the absence of June Mar Fajardo, CJ Perez, Chris Ross, Marcio Lassiter, Vic Manuel, and later Terrence Romeo and Mo Tautuaa led to a huge downward trend.
The Beermen had only four regulars in Cruz, Brondial, Allyn Bulanadi and new signing Noy Baclao, prompting coach Jorge Gallent to tap players from the team’s PBA 3×3 squad.
The scores:
TERRAFIRMA 85—Tiongson 15, Daquioag 13, Calvo 10, Alolino 10, Gomez de Liano 9, Go 8, Camson 8, Ramos 6, Cahilig 4, Alanes 2.
SAN MIGUEL 72—Brondial 19, Cruz 19, Bulanadi 11, Apacible 6, Lee 6, Faundo 5, Baclao 4, Javelona 2, Dela Cruz 0, Lazarte 0.
Quarters: 21-19, 37-37, 60-57, 85-72.
